Kitchen Storage Solutions!

Unique Kitchen Storage Solutions for Summer Hello Summer! It sure has been a long time and I really missed you! Glad to have you back! I think I am speaking for a number of people when I say that! So what can I share with you this summer? I pondered and then I thought about what I really love doing: organizing. Is that a bit weird? Nerdy perhaps? Either way, I love to find solutions to storage problems and isn’t that what a kitchen is all about? Storing what we need and keeping it close at hand for when we need it. So, I would like to share with you some unique storage solutions we have found. Hang on, it’s gonna be a wild ride!!! Most of the time, I find that we have more stuff than cupboard space. Stuffing lots of things in drawers and cupboards is really not the best solution-we still need to be able to find it and get it out of the cupboard without an avalanche to follow! So, obviously, we need to first establish what we need and what we can do without. I have some rules that help determine what to keep and what to let go of: Do you use it? If you have a turkey baster, but are a vegetarian, you probably don’t use it. Do you have more than one? Sometimes this is a good idea-I have two sets of measuring cups and measuring spoons because I tend to be baking or cooking a number of things at once—another weird quirk of mine! If you have three spatulas, perhaps you...
Mother’s Day Recipes: Treat Mom to a Special Breakfast at Home

Mother’s Day Recipes: Treat Mom to a Special Breakfast at Home

One of our favourite Mother’s Day traditions is to enjoy Mother’s Day breakfast or brunch at home. It’s a pleasure to cook and entertain guests in our beautiful custom kitchen. Here are a couple of our family’s recipes. The watermelon salad might surprise you — but it’s an ideal treat in the hot weather we’ve been having lately. Watermelon Salad for Mother’s Day 3 ½ lbs seedless watermelon cut into 1” cubes (about 6 cups) 2 Tbsp fresh lime juice ½ cup fresh basil leaves, cut into thin strips Coarse salt and pepper 4 oz feta cheese broken into large pieces Combine watermelon, lime juice and ½ the basil. Season with salt and pepper. Divide among 4 plates. Scatter cheese and remaining basil on top. Enjoy! Mother’s Day Crepes 1 c flour 2 eggs ½ c milk ½ c water ¼ tsp salt 2 Tbsp melted butter In large mixing bowl, whisk flour and eggs. Gradually add in milk and water, stirring to combine. Add salt and butter, beat until smooth. Heat lightly oiled griddle or fry pan over med-high heat. Pour or scoop ¼ c batter into pan. Tilt pan to evenly coast surface. Cook about 2 minutes until bottom is light brown. Loosen with spatula, flip and cook other side. To assemble crepes: Spread Nutella, top with sliced bananas and fold over then top with whipped cream. Cream together 8 oz softened cream cheese with 1 ¼ cups sifted icing sugar, 1 Tbsp lemon juice, 1 tsp lemon zest and ½ tsp vanilla extract. Fill crepes with sliced strawberries and 1/3 cup of the cream cheese filling....
Vinarterta Recipe for Christmas

Vinarterta Recipe for Christmas

Vinarterta Recipe for Christmas Vinarterta is a traditional Icelandic recipe with Christmas fruits and spices. It makes a showy dessert to bring to a dinner party, or serve at home. 1 cup butter 1 ½ cups granulated sugar 3 eggs 2 tsp vanilla 4 cups all purpose flour 1 Tbsp baking powder ½ tsp salt ¼ cup milk Prune filling: 3 cups pitted prunes 1 cup packed brown sugar 2 Tbsp lemon juice 1 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp cardamom In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Combine flour, baking powder and salt; stir into creamed mixture alternately with milk to form a soft dough. Chill for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, cut 7 waxed paper circles to fit into bottoms of 8” layer cake pans. Divide dough into 7 balls. Press dough evenly to edges of each waxed paper circle. Set circles into greased pans. Bake in 350°F oven for 20 minutes or until very lightly browned. Prune filling: Place prunes in saucepan with enough water to cover. Bring to a boil and simmer until tender, about 25 to 30 minutes. Drain and reserve liquid. In blender or food processor, combine prunes, brown sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon and cardamom. Puree until smooth, adding enough of reserved liquid to make spreadable. Let cool. Let cakes cool for a few minutes, then remove waxed paper. When cakes are completely cooled, spread prune filling on 6 of the 7 layers. Stack cakes on top of each other, placing top layer smooth side up. At this point, the cakes will be somewhat crisp; the filling will soften them...

What to Look for in a Quote for Kitchen Cabinetry or Bathroom Cabinetry

What to Look for in a Quote for Kitchen Cabinetry or Bathroom Cabinetry

It’s summer and that makes me think of fruit…more berries, but really all fruit. And so, today I wanted to talk to you about some of my favourite fruit-apples and oranges! Yes, this is still us at Elite Kitchens and Bathrooms, but the reason I wanted to talk about apples and oranges is to show you how to compare quotes you receive for kitchen or bathroom cabinetry. We encourage you to get another quote or two if you wish before you renovate your kitchen or bathroom, but sometimes this can cause more confusion than if you didn’t get another quote. Today, I wanted to give you some tools to know what to look for, what questions to ask and how to compare quotes for kitchen and bathroom cabinetry. You’ll want to make sure that the quotes you are getting are comparing apples to apples! Free Estimates and Drawings To start, here at Elite we give free estimates, designs and quotes. Be careful of those who do not. Some cabinetry companies charge for this service. A good place to start is to ask if their quotes are complimentary. Also, some cabinetry companies do not give you the drawings to take home to consider. This may not sound like a big deal, but it can lead to confusion when you are trying to compare one price quote to another. We operate on a trust basis. We trust that you will use the drawing to make your decision based on all the information. Delivery and Installation Next thing to watch for is whether delivery and installation are included. Our quotes include both delivery and...
Spring News: Luxe Laundry Rooms for 2015

Spring News: Luxe Laundry Rooms for 2015

Welcome Spring!

I have waited for so long to feel that wonderful rush of hope for warmer weather, sunshine, green grass, flowers and all the excitement of the new season! And so, like many of you, my excitement turns to the desire to dust off the winter and get a fresh start. If you are thinking this is an article on spring cleaning, well you are in for a surprise-it’s not!!! (I did that article last year!) This year I wanted to focus on a room that works hard to keep us clean, but can be overlooked and sometimes even put in a dark, dreary basement corner. I am speaking about the laundry room! If you guessed correctly, you win a chance to upgrade your laundry room to a new high! Of course, Ken and Sabrina at Elite would be very happy to help you design the perfect laundry room for you! After you are done, you may never want to leave, except to grab a latte and go back for another load of laundry! Enjoy your spring! -Verona Jungling

Some unique ideas for the laundry room are:

Room for Furry Friends

Pet washing station Elevate a tiled area and include a shower wand and you have the perfect place to wash your little four legged friend as soon as he/she comes in from a walk without straining your back! Brilliant! If only I had room for this idea-it would be in my own home faster than my dog! You could also incorporate a kennel or bed for fido to spend more time in here with you as you wash, dry, fold and repeat! If you have extra cupboard space, you can turn it into a comfortable dog bed. Additionally, by using stackable washer/dryer sets, you allow extra space for convenient dog showers. Let’s not forget the felines in your home. Why not incorporate the litter box into a pull out drawer! So easy to clean and accessible to your cat while “shut” and tucked out of sight! A pull-out litterbox in the laundry room ... notch allows cat easy entry, pullout makes cleaning staff happy.

Spaces to Care for Delicate Clothing

Extra drying racks

Saving money and keeping your clothes looking new two great reasons to hang up your clothes rather than throwing them in the dryer.

New Year…New Kitchen? Kitchen Trends for 2015

New Year New Kitchen? Here are some of the Kitchen Trends for 2015 If your resolution for 2015 is to update your home, I imagine you have a lot of questions about what is current and in fashion for kitchens for the upcoming year. Let’s take a walk through the new kitchen trends for 2015. I have sifted through what the designers are saying and have found which styles will last and which ones will simply fade away. Designers typically suggest maintaining a more timeless appearance and I agree. Here is what the designers are suggesting will be popular in 2015: White – when choosing a colour, this one is still quite popular. You can choose white for a traditional or contemporary kitchen. It is a great choice especially if you have a smaller kitchen and you chose white appliances that give the illusion of a larger space. You could also combine with dark or natural wood or stone elements to bring in more colour but keeping with the timelessness of white. Natural woods or finishes – Mixing different woods and finishes is also a trend that will be continuing in 2015. We have a large selection of different doors in a variety of different woods that can further be stained an even larger selection of different hues. The choice is yours and we have so much to choose from! We would love to have the opportunity to show you our selection in our showroom. In fact, our newest display kitchen is made entirely of birch-quite an unusual look! We invite you to come to check it out in...

Fall 2014 Newsletter: Kitchen & Home Organization

Here’s the recipe from our Fall 2014 newsletter. Download the full newsletter with kitchen tips, a special offer from Well Seasoned gourmet food store and more… here.   The Flavors of Fall! Recipe from Angie Quaale, owner of Well Seasoned gourmet food store in Langley BC As the weather starts to cools, the tasty root veggies start to make their debut at the local Farmers Markets – that to me, is a sure sign of the days getting shorter! One of my favorite side dishes of all times is a simple roasted vegetable medley seasoned with Herbs de Provence. I change it up occasionally, adding other vegetables as they are available and sometimes garnishing it decadently with chopped fresh dates, a little feta cheese & fresh parsley!   Roasted Fall Vegetables with Herbs de Provence Herbs de Provence is a classic French seasoning blend of rosemary, fennel, thyme, savory, marjoram & lavender that works particularly well in this recipe but also with roasted chicken or pork. 2 large sweet potatoes or yams peeled & cut into ½ “ pieces 1 large white onion 2 large carrots 2 large parsnips 12 Brussel sprouts, cut in half 3 Tbsp. olive oil 2 Tbsp. Dijon mustard 3 tsp. Herbs de Provence 1 tsp. kosher salt 1 tsp. freshly cracked black pepper Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Wash, peel and cut all vegetables into ½ “ slices, place in a large casserole dish. Whisk together remaining ingredients. Pour over vegetables and toss to coat. Bake for 35 – 40 minutes or until fork tender. Serve warm or at room temperature. For a special...

The cabinets are usually more demure, staying with a natural wood, a stained wood or white, black or grey (the newest colour to become popular). But you can really add drama, glitz and texture with the countertop. I think of it as the “pop” like the way your purse or...

The Great Canadian Summer Issue, July 2013

Enter The Great Canadian Summer Contest on our Facebook Page Be sure to check out our newest contest on Facebook at: Elite Kitchens and Bathrooms. Like us and you’re entered in a draw to win a basket of local goodlies! Like Us on Facebook and Win!    Verona’s Tips: Summer 2013 Trends   I was a little concerned about commenting on trends because trends usually mean something that is popular one day and unpopular or out-of-date the next. Although this usually applies to fashion, kitchens also fall victim to trends. The good news is that the trends stay longer with kitchens than wide-legged jeans! So in researching trends for 2013, I tread carefully, with a lot of consideration to our west coast lifestyle. Taking the above into consideration, there is some good news to share with you! The trends this season are towards traditional or transitional style kitchens. Traditional kitchens are easy to understand. But “transitional” kitchens refers to a traditional kitchen in its essence but with a simpler aesthetic appeal. It has cleaner lines and less decorative accents. But, in both kitchens, we at Elite like to emphasize function. Your kitchen should still be comfortable and accessible. Those things are always in trend! According to Zillow Digs Spring Trend Report, May 2013, the traditional look is very popular but the focus is on organization and storage ideas as well as islands. It always seems that there are more pots than there are cupboards. So, organization is something we take seriously! Those pots should be easily accessible or you just won’t use them. We prefer drawers instead of cupboards for your...
