Kitchen renovations can cover a big range of price tags. The good news is that people like nice kitchens, and it is money well spent. You are likely to get a handsome return on your investment. There are, however, some ways to save money on your reno. We’re going to give you some tips on that.

Cabinets

Good cabinets are not cheap. And in a big kitchen, they can run into the tens of thousands of dollars. But they don’t have to cost that much. It is possible to keep your current cabinets and just get them refaced. Or you can paint the ones you have. Or you can put new doors and pulls on old cabinets. Or you can buy used kitchen cabinetry from one or more kitchens and have a handyman make them fit yours.

Counters

Having a lot of counterspace is wonderful for the home chef. But solid surface counters can cost a fortune. Consider putting the costly solid surface like granite or marble in one area just for rolling out dough, for example, and do the rest of the counter in laminate. Laminates are much better looking now than they were in 1950. You might be surprised at how classy some of them look.

Flooring

You may want a certain look, but it’s often possible to choose a material that gives you the look you want on a budget. For example, there are all kinds of vinyl floors that mimic wood or stone at a fraction of the price—and they are easy to clean, too.

It’s possible to find tile or other flooring that is on sale if you’re not in a hurry. Start planning a year or two ahead and hit all the sales to save some money.

Appliances

Buy appliances ahead either on sale or with minor damage like a scratch that no one will ever see. You’ll save maybe 20 or 25 percent of the price, and you are the only one who will ever know that your fridge has a scratch at floor level.

Backsplash

You may want that expensive marble backsplash but some budget tiles from the big box store may look pretty good, too. The key is to have good taste, and if you don’t have it, then take along a friend who does or pay for an hour of consultation with a professional.

You do not have to spend a million dollars on your kitchen reno for your kitchen to look fantastic. A few carefully chosen elements that are budget friendly can allow you to splurge on something you just cannot live without—like a fancy chandelier.
