Style
The style of your home and your individual style should be a major consideration. You will want the kitchen to echo the rest of the house. An ultra-modern kitchen will look out of place if the rest of the home is very traditional. Also, it is a good idea to have similar colours as the rest of the house or at least colours that flow easily from room to room from the same palette.
Resale?
If you are not planning to stay in your house for at least five years, then by all means consider resale. Usually, the safest bet for a home that will be sold is to use neutral colours. Picks a palette related to sand or stone or grays or whites. These are neutral backgrounds that easy for a potential buyer to live with or change. A very fancy and expensive swirly patterned granite counter may look exquisite to you but will likely be less appealing to another buyer.
Maintenance
Let’s face it: some floors are easier to clean and maintain than others. Wood looks beautiful and high-end, but it is not necessarily ideal for a kitchen because it is relatively soft. Brick looks beautiful, especially in a rustic home, but it needs sealing, and is hard on the feet. Ceramic tile is easy to clean and repair, but is very hard when standing for long periods. Don’t rule out vinyl sheet flooring or vinyl tile, because it is very tough stuff that is easy to clean and more economic than most other floorings. Also, linoleum is now back in fashion, and it is a eco-friendly choice with a soft touch.
