There are loads of different types of countertops available in today’s market. Quartz, quartzite, marble, concrete, laminate, porcelain, wood, bamboo, granite, soapstone, and ceramic tile are just a few of them. And they all have their plusses and minuses and different price points.

When we consider their positives and negatives, durability is a consideration, but exactly what do we mean by durable? Durable can mean “will not chip easily” or “will resist heat” or “will not stain.” There is no one countertop that will do everything for everyone. So, one has to decide what are the most important characteristics for the client. In today’s blog, we will look briefly at the most common countertop materials.

Quartz

Arguably the hardest surface, but it can chip. It is heat and stain resistant, but it can scorch. It is also among the most expensive choices, but it does come in many colours and patterns.

Granite

A natural slab that is very hard and heat resistant, but it can chip. Some argue that it is not a renewable resource. Colours are somewhat limited. It needs resealing periodically, and acidic materials can damage the surface.

Marble

Beautiful, natural stone. Limited colours, and limited resource. It will scratch or etch easily although it is heat resistant.

Soapstone

Heat resistant but will scratch and requires maintenance. Limited colour choices. Not the easiest to maintain.

Laminate

Not heat resistant and can scratch. But otherwise very durable and long lasting. Will not chip. Will not be damaged from acidic foods. Not as sought after in the resale market.

Ceramic Tile

Hard, and heat resistant, but grout lines can be a headache. Not damaged from acidic foods and unlikely to get scratched.

These are just a few of the possibilities. One has to think about will I be reselling this house? What is the budget? And what meets my needs. This is how we should be choosing countertops.
