Wood cabinets are beautiful. They are sturdy, last a long time, and are an investment in the future of your home. They are also very desirable in the event that you sell your home in the future. For all of those reasons, it is a good idea to do what you can to extend their service lives. In today’s blog article, we want to give you some tips on making your wood cabinets last as long as possible.

Keep Them Clean

While this may sound odd, keeping your cabinets clean will actually help them to last longer. Dirt can be corrosive, and leaving dirt in place can mar the finish and even pit the wood. And when you are cleaning them, use a soft cloth or sponge with plain, warm soap and water. Do not use abrasive cloths or cleaning products with lots of unnecessary chemicals.

Clean Inside the Cabinets

When we suggest keeping cabinets clean, we mean inside and out. Cabinets get dirty inside just with regular use, and the same rules apply. Keeping them clean will help them last longer. Cleaning inside all the cabinets at one time will be a big job, so try cleaning inside just one cabinet or drawer every week, then all of the cabinets will be clean all the time.

Kettles

If you use an electric kettle on your counter, place it where the steam is not directly underneath the upper cabinets. Wood expands and contracts, and a steady steam bath multiple times per day is going to damage your upper cabinets. This is especially true if the only the doors are solid wood and rest of the cabinet is some kind of composite material.

These simple tips will make your cabinets look great all the time and last as long as possible. Solid wood cabinets will last a very long time even if they need to be refinished eventually.
