There are lots of ways to brighten up an old kitchen, and what you can do is limited only by your creativity and your budget. In today’s blog, we want to give you some ideas for how to brighten an old kitchen from least expensive to most expensive.
Clean it
This may sound odd, but a sparkling clean kitchen is much more inviting than one that looks dingy. Sometimes, just scrubbing the counters, the cabinets and pulls, and the floor can really make a kitchen come alive. And this is something that doesn’t cost anything.
Flowers
Get in the habit of putting some fresh flowers in the kitchen. Fresh flowers will probably last about a week. You can buy them all year round, and you can choose any colour or colours that you like.
Hardware
Consider changing your hardware. Even if your cabinets are old, if they are clean and you add some shiny new hardware, they can look a hundred times better. Consider glass pulls that look vintage and will sparkle.
Lighting
Try adding some under-cabinet lighting. This is not hard to do, even in an old kitchen. You can find lighting that runs on batteries and is easy to install. Consider changing an overhead fixture for one that gives you more light.
A more expensive option would be to add skylights or light tunnels. These will really brighten up any room and are less expensive that buying new cabinets.
Obviously, you could paint the walls or change (or add a backsplash) or change counters, but now we are getting into bigger renos with bigger budgets. In the meantime, some small touches can go a long way to brightening up the kitchen.
