There has never been a perfect countertop choice. Every countertop material has advantages and disadvantages. And there are tons of materials to choose from, even some unusual ones like glass or stainless steel, which is more often seen in a commercial kitchen. That said, today, granite and quartz are probably the most sought after for residential applications. In today’s blog article, we are going to talk about what is important to know about granite versus quartz for your counter.

Granite

The advantage of granite is that it is a natural stone. This means that no two slabs are identical. However, this is also a disadvantage in that colour may not be perfectly uniform throughout the slab. Also, it is a resource that is not renewable. So, if you are preoccupied with friendliness to the environment, then granite may not be the best choice.

Granite is pretty hard, but it can chip if you hit it just right. It is not unbreakable.

Quartz

Quartz countertops are made of pieces of quartz that are suspended in a resin with colour added. That means that there is less stone waste, and the colour can be much more uniform than granite—if that is important to you. You are less likely to chip a quartz countertop, and quartz does not need resealing like granite does.

The downside of quartz is that it is not as heat resistant as granite is. You will have to use trivets or towels or something to protect the surface from a hot pot or oven dish.

Both materials are similar in price. Quartz used to be more expensive, but there are some rare granite colours and patterns that are much more expensive than quartz. So, if you are considering one of these two materials, then definitely think about what is most important to you. Heat resistance? The environment? Colour? Then you can make an informed decision.
