Sink placement is very important in kitchen design, perhaps more important than you may realize. The sink plays a big role, and we often spend lots of time in front of it. We not only use it for washing dishes, but we also use it for food prep. In today’s blog article, we are going to look at what one needs to consider when determining sink placement.
Location
The first consideration is location. By location we mean is there ample counter space on each side of the sink? You will regret it if you do not have at least a little space to set down a dirty dish or to set down a clean one, outside of the sink. Are you planning on having a drying rack? Then you need space for that, too.
Window
If possible, it is nice to have a window to look out of, for example to watch your kids in the backyard or to see the sunset. After all, you may be spending lots of time at the sink. Nowadays, often the sink faces into a room on an island or peninsula. The problem with that is that running water makes noise, which might be bothersome to someone watching television, and there will also be the splashing of water.
Work Triangle
Remember that traditionally the sink is part of the work triangle in the kitchen. So, you would generally want the sink, the refrigerator, and the stove to be not far from each other. The reasons are not complicated. You might take vegetables from the refrigerator to wash in the sink and then add to a pot on the stove. You might take a big pot of water from the stove to sink to drain your pasta. There are good reasons to consider this triangle when determining sink placement.
