Choosing a kitchen backsplash is great fun. Often those who are trying to be very economical about their kitchen renovation will splurge on the backsplash. And there are some good reasons for this. The square footage for a backsplash is usually fairly small, but the look can have a big impact. In today’s blog article, we are going to talk about some considerations when choosing your backsplash.
Colour
The backsplash is where you can be creative. For example, you can have a monochromatic kitchen with a contrasting colour backsplash, that makes a big “splash” so to speak. Even if the backsplash colour is not contrasting, you can still have some fun with it. For example, in a neutral beige/stone-coloured kitchen, you could have a beige and white checkerboard backsplash. So, feel free to think outside the box.
Grout
If you are using tile, then consider your grout lines. If you are a gourmet cook, then you will want narrow grout lines because it is harder to clean grout than it is to clean tile. Also, perhaps you want as few grout lines or seams as possible. If that is the case, then consider a stainless-steel backsplash, like we see in a commercial kitchen or even something solid surface like Corian or quartz.
Texture
Consider texture. Rough stone or brick backsplashes are beautiful but harder to clean than something smooth. Such as when your lasagna is splashed onto it. On the other hand, something very smooth and shiny, like glass or mirror, will brighten your kitchen, but may show fingerprints or smudges easily. Think hard about texture before making up your mind.
Unique
Also, consider something unique. For example, you can have an artist do a one-of-a-kind mosaic for your backsplash. Or you could mix and match colours or textures. There are no rules, and you are not required to have a white, subway-tile backsplash. Your kitchen contractor can help you to have something totally unique if that is what you want. Make the most of your backsplash and enjoy it.
