If you are building or renovating a kitchen in Langley, BC, there is a tremendous variety of hinge types available to choose from. Hinges can vary in both form and function—or both. In today’s blog article we are going to talk about form, and then, next month, we continue talking about hinges as they relate to function.
Do you see them?
The first consideration is whether you see the hinges or not. Most drawer hinges and hardware are not visible unless the drawer is open.
As far as cabinet hinges go, hinges can be visible or not. Barrel hinges are very common where a thin vertical barrel is seen when the door is closed. There are more modern barrels that are even square or other not-round shapes.
With a more rustic look, there are more old-fashioned strap hinges.
If the hinges are going to be visible on the outside when the cabinet door is closed, then you have to consider how you want them to look. Do you want a certain colour? Like gold or silver? Shiny or glossy or matte? Do you want them smooth or rough, like in wrought iron?
You may want visible hinges to match future pulls or handles. So, some careful consideration should be given to visible hinges. In the case of a contemporary and sleek kitchen, if the hinges are invisible to the outside, then this will not be important.
Once you have the form nailed down, then you can go on to consider the function of the hinges which we will discuss next month.
