Counters
If you have a lot of counter real estate, and you choose an expensive material like marble or granite, then counters become a big ticket item. However, the whole counter doesn’t have to be the same material.
It’s possible to use a cheaper material for most of the counter space, and only use a stone like granite in one area, like the island or the one spot where you will be rolling out dough for baking. So, our first suggestion is to consider more than one material for counters. There are some really beautiful laminates available now that would bring your counter budget way down.
Backsplash
The backsplash is one area where people often spend more per square foot because it’s a small area that can have a big impact. However, if you communicate to your designer or contractor that you want a certain look but with a smaller price tag, you can often find materials that mimic something much more expensive at a much more reasonable price.
Large Appliances
If you need new appliances, you can often find them on sale even if the kitchen is not ready for their installation. Once you know the exact layout of the kitchen, be on the lookout for appliances that you will need before long, buy them, and store them ahead of schedule. You can save quite a bit of money like that.
Many retailers will negotiate on price if you buy more than one item, your contractor may be able to get a better price for you, and retailers will often discount something steeply if it has a scratch—which no one will ever see. With a little planning ahead, you can save thousands on appliances.
