Designing a kitchen is a big job with a lot of choices to be made. For instance, do you choose what looks the best, or do you go with what will last the longest? Well, why not both!? When it comes to picking custom kitchen cabinets and countertops, a little extra knowledge makes the decisions easier. So, today, we’re going to show you how to balance style with long-term durability, without sacrificing either.

Custom kitchen cabinets

  • Solid wood
  • Laminate

Both of these materials are very popular for good reason. They offer top-notch durability and are beautiful each in their own right.

Wood is a classic choice for kitchens. It’s strong, has a warm aesthetic, stands up to daily use, and can be painted or stained. It’s not as well-suited to high-humidity areas though, so if wood cabinets are your style, ensure the wood is properly sealed and the kitchen is well-ventilated.

Laminate kitchen cabinets are like the sleek, new kid-on-the-block. Colours can be fully customised, as can patterns and textures. Unlike wood, laminate is moisture-resistant and very low-maintenance. If your style is modern, consider laminate custom kitchen cabinets.

Countertops

  • Quartz: engineered, non-porous, resists stains, low-maintenance
  • Porcelain: engineered, resistant to heat, scratches and stains
  • Quartzite: natural stone, scratch resistant, unique patterns
  • Granite: natural stone, heat resistant, unique patterns

Quartz, quartzite, porcelain and granite are incredibly durable, mineral-rich materials. Each has unique properties and aesthetics. They all make stunning countertops.

Quartz and porcelain are manufactured materials which makes them non-porous. This makes them resistant to stains naturally. It also means they have a more uniform appearance. If your countertop layout is going to have seams, a consistent look makes hiding seams a lot easier. These two materials create sleek and modern surfaces.

Quartzite, which resembles marble, and granite are made of natural stone. Their porous nature means they need to be sealed for stain prevention. Unique patterning means no two countertops will be the same so they offer a lot of design opportunities.
