Form and Function
In general, rooms in a house fulfill two things: form and function. The function is how the room is used. For example, in a kitchen, you want a dishwasher to be within easy reach of the sink. While that example may seem obvious to you, other parts of kitchen design may not seem quite so obvious. For example, you need some counter space near the refrigerator, so you can set groceries down on their way into or out of the refrigerator.
Your personal style can and should play a role in the function of your kitchen, but only you can decide what you need in the kitchen to fit your needs. So, for example, if you like to bake, you may want an area with a stone or marble counter just for rolling out dough.
Most often when we think of personal style, we are thinking about form, or how a room looks and feels. Again, you are the best judge of what your style is. If you are not sure what your style is, a good place to look at kitchen photos in through the app, Houzz. Do you like a kitchen that is bright and cheerful or dark and moody? Is your taste contemporary with smooth lines and glossy surfaces? Or is your taste more country with rustic cabinets and pulls.
Your personal taste in the kitchen will dictate not only the surfaces of your cabinets, such as stained wood or painted or a glassy lacquer finish or even stainless steel, but also the colors of walls, backsplash, counters, and the finishes on plumbing fixtures.
